*The Institute for Integrative Toxicology presents the 2nd Annual Jerry Hook Distinguished Lectureship given by Dr. Zheng Dong, to speak on, "Save the Kidneys During Cisplatin Chemotherapy," on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m in 162 Food Safety & Toxicology Building.
Lecture Synopsis:
Cisplatin is one of the most widely used chemotherapy drugs for cancer treatment, but it is also notorious for its side effects in normal tissues and organs, especially kidneys. Cisplatin induces acute kidney injury (AKI) within days of exposure, which may progress into long-term pathologies resulting in chronic kidney disease (CKD). In the past two decades, we have delineated the mechanism of kidney tubular cell death involving DNA damage response, DNA damage-independent pathways, and epigenetic regulations. Interesting, intrinsic cytoprotective mechanisms, such as autophagy, are also activated. These and further investigations would lead to effective strategies that not only protect kidneys but may also enhance the chemotherapeutic effects of cisplatin in tumors.
About the Speaker:
Dr. Dong is Regents’ Professor and Leon H. Charbonnier Endowed Chair at Medical College of Georgia of Augusta University, USA. He is also the Director of Research & Development and Senior Research Career Scientist and at Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, USA. Dr. Dong has years of research experience in kidney injury, protection, and repair with a focus on autophagy, mitochondial regulation, epigenetics, and DNA damage response in acute and chronic kidney diseases. He has published more than 300 full-length articles in regarded journals that have been cited for over 35,000 times with an H-index score of 91. Dr. Dong has served and continues to serve on NIH and VA study sections of USA and numerous international grant review panels. He is a co-editor of the book "Essentials of Apoptosis” (Humana Press) and the "Cell Death in Biology and Disease Series” (Springer) book series. He is an associate editor for the American Journal of Physiology-Renal Physiology and the journal Kidney Diseases. He is also an active editorial board member of other journals including the Journal of American Society of Nephrology-JASN, Kidney International and American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology.
