Lecture Synopsis: Biomarker science has the unique capability to catalyze collaborations between academia, industry, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders with the goal of establishing accurate diagnosis and accelerating the delivery of safe and effective medicines to patients, particularly in areas of high unmet need. Industry is able to ask the most relevant biomarker science questions in the right contexts of use and apply high standards for biomarker discovery, development and validation; academia enables innovation in discovery of biomarkers and biomarker measurement technologies; academic teaching hospitals and large biobanks allow access to well-annotated clinical biospecimens and provide clinical contexts of use; and regulators can qualify the biomarkers for wider acceptance by the biomedical community. A collaborative effort in biomarker science not only catalyzes faster approvals of safe and effective medicines with decreased development costs, but it would also fulfill our greatest goal: to deliver the right dose of the right medicines to the right patients at the right time.
