IIT Seminar Series: Matthew Campen

Tue, January 21, 2025 11:00 AM - Tue, January 21, 2025 1:00 PM at 162 Food Safety & Toxicology Building

campen_matthew25.jpg*The Institute for Integrative Toxicology presents Dr. Matthew Campen, University of New Mexico, to speak on, “Neuroplastics,” on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in 162 Food Safety and Toxicology Building.

The global burden of plastics waste is progressively degrading into micro- and nanoplastics that have the potential to access the human body and alter health. We have used several methods to identify and quantify plastics content of the human body, highlighting a preferential uptake into the human brain that is increasing over time. This presentation provides a new benchmark for the concentrations in the human body and will discuss research needs to improve upon this body of knowledge.

Dr. Matthew Campen received a BS in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech, then his PhD in Environmental Science and Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then did a postdoctoral fellowship in pulmonary physiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has authored over 100 peer reviewed publications, largely in the area of the cardiovascular health effects of inhaled pollutants. Matt directs the New Mexico Center for Metals in Biology and Medicine, as well as the KL2 Mentored Career Development Program within the UNM Clinical and Translational Sciences Center. He is also the Deputy Director and Training Core director for the NIEHS P42 UNM Metal Exposure and Toxicity Assessment on Tribal Lands in the Southwest (UNM METALS) Superfund Research Program Center.
