EITS Track: Biomedical Toxicology

Education: B.S. Chemistry, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Research Interests:
Methylmercury (MeHg) is an environmental toxicant known to selectively target granule cells of the cerebellum through various membrane proteins and ion channels. This neurotoxic effect manifests as ataxia in populations exposed to MeHg. Another frequently presented sign of MeHg poisoning, and the focus of my dissertation research, is sensory neuropathy. I will explore the etiology of this condition, probe the involvement of various membrane proteins and ion channels, and propose a mechanism by which disturbances in sensory transmission occur.
