Alexandra Colon-RodriguezCooperating Doctoral Program: Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology Program

EITS Track: Biomedical Toxicology

Education: B.S., Applied Microbiology, Universidad del Este

Research Interests:
My research interests are in neurotoxicology. Specifically studying how environmental neurotoxicants can cause genetic changes that can lead to neurodegenerative disorders. As part of the Comparative Medicine and Integrative Biology program I have had the opportunity to work under the guidance of Dr. William D. Atchison studying the effects methylmercury, an environmental neurotoxicant, on ion channels in the brain and spinal cord. Learning how deleterious exposure to this environmental toxicant is has led me to the topic of my thesis project, "Effects of Methylmercury exposure on glutamate receptors in spinal cord motor neurons."
