Dr. Hollingworth has expertise in pesticide toxicology, and in toxic mechanisms and resistance mechanisms to pesticides. He no longer has a research program, but continues teaching and outreach activities in insecticide toxicology, the risk assessment and regulation of chemical contaminants in the diet, and the safety assessment of genetically modified foods, particularly at the international level.

Fellow Award, Pesticide Chemistry Division, American Chemical Society (1981); Group Honor Award for Research Excellence, USDA (1996); Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (2000); International Award for Research in Agrochemicals, American Chemical Society (2003). He is active in the American Association for the Advancement of Science; American Chemical Society-Divisional Membership in Agrochemicals and Agricultural Food and Chemistry. He is a past director of the National Food Safety and Toxicology Center at MSU and the MSU Pesticide Research Center. He recently was elected to the Hall of Fame for the USDA's IR-4
(specialty crop pesticide registration) program after running the North Central Region section of the program for the last 29 years at MSU.
