Dr. Hayes’ research recently has primarily focused on food safety with a particular interest on food additives and contaminant. A major emphasis has been the investigation of the potential untoward effects of mycotoxins in the food supply on the reproductive system. Dr. Hayes is also interested in the application of newer methods for safety evaluation involving alternative methods and the use of system toxicology in understand adverse outcome pathways.

Selected Professional Activities:
Dr. Hayes has served on committees for NAS, NIH, FDA, EPS and DOD and is currently a member of the FDA Food Advisor Committee. Dr. Hayes has authored 250 peer reviewed publications, is editor of Hayes' Principles and Methods of Toxicology, Human and Experimental Toxicology, Cutaneous and Ocular Toxicology, Food and Chemical Toxicology and Target Organ Toxicity Series. He is diplomate of American Board of Toxicology, Academy of Toxicological Sciences, American Board of Forensic Medicine, and American Board of Forensic Examiners and Fellow of Academy of Toxicological Sciences, Institute of Biology, American College of Forensic Examiners and American College of Nutrition and is registered toxicologist in the EU and certified nutrition specialist . Dr. Hayes was honored by Society of Toxicology with its Merit Award, by Mid-Atlantic Society of Toxicology with its Ambassador Award, by American College of Toxicology with its Distinguished Scientist Award and by International Dose-Response Society with its Outstanding Leadership Award. Dr. Hayes was named Distinguished Fellow by the American College of Toxicology and Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
