IIT Seminar Series: Natalie Johnson

Tue, February 20, 2024 11:00 AM - Tue, February 20, 2024 1:00 PM at 162 Food Safety & Toxicology Building

Natalie Johnson*The Institute for Integrative Toxicology presents Dr. Natalie Johnson, Texas A&M University, to speak on, “Responding to Air Pollution in Disasters,” on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. in 162 Food Safety and Toxicology Building.

Air pollution is a pervasive environmental health issue. Emissions data following disasters often lack comprehensive measurement across the vast range of airborne pollutants to adequately inform risk assessment. Research in the Johnson laboratory and part of the Texas A&M Superfund Research Center is focused on characterizing complex volatile organic compound mixtures via mobile air monitoring using high resolution mass spectrometry coupled with nontargeted analysis. This seminar will highlight studies conducted in Texas environmental justice communities and in response to the East Palestine train derailment and chemical spill.

Dr. Johnson's research interests include air pollution exposure, particularly effects on infants and children following prenatal exposure, including susceptibility to respiratory infections and asthma. She is interested in nutritional interventions to reduce oxidative stress associated with maternal exposures to protect against these common childhood diseases. Dr. Johnson is the vice chair of the interdisciplinary program in Toxicology. She received her B.S. in biology and Ph.D. in toxicology from Texas A&M University. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in environmental health sciences.
